Rote Chert Quarry

Rote Chert Quarry

The Rote Chert Quarry is a one-acre parcel donated to the Archaeological Conservancy by a developer by the name of Rote.

This parcel contains one of many and extensive outcroppings of the material know as Madera Chert, which was heavily used by native populations in the vicinity. This predominantly red, but also red and white chert is commonly seen on Galisteo Basin pueblos. Portions of the chert source have been recorded by surveys conducted for developments, as mandated by the Santa Fe City Archaeological Ordinance.
